Does your website need a redesign? Here are some things to consider when looking at your website and deciding on investing in a site redesign:
- Evaluate your existing site
What are the success and failures of your existing site? Consult a few people to get an honest evaluation of your existing site.
- Do Some Brainstorming
What new and fresh ideas are missing? Brainstorm with a team of people to get fresh ideas. Write down the ideas that come from the brainstorming.
- Why do people currently visit?
Why are people visiting your site? In most cases, they are coming for information or are in need of your company's product or service.
- Does it grab peoples attention?
Do you think visitors remember your site? Does it have something that gets attention and is memorable? If they do not bookmark your site what will get them to come back? You should give your visitor something to remember so they can find their way back to your site.
- Evaluate your competitors
What can you learn from your competitors? Get ideas about the latest web design, technology and communication concepts by looking analytically at competitor sites.
- Find your target audience
Who is the target audience? Decide whom you want to target with the site. Who is your customer or audience? What are their needs or points of interest and how can they be served? List the top three categories of people. Write three one sentence descriptions of different people in your target audience. Then write a few words that might interest these people and cause them to respond to your site.
- Theme and 'look and feel'
What is the mood or emotion that you want to communicate? Decide on the overall theme and "look and feel" of the site. For example: humor, professional, academic, family, etc.
- Website Content
Your content should be clear and well written. A large
number of websites are providing poorly written content, making
them less appealing. Redesigning requires having outside input on your content to see if it is clear, up-to-date, accurate and communicates the message it's supposed to. From there, rewrite the content.
- Make it easy for customers to do
business with you
When redesigning a website it's helpful to know as much as possible about how your customer is responding to your site.
For example, are they able to get all the information needed to make an informed decision? Are there too many steps involved in ordering or getting information? What obstacles are in the way? Keep it direct and simple.
If you notice areas within your website that could use some work, then a site redesign is recommended. Redesign is happening right now, and it can make a big difference in your business.
